The Architecture of Atonement
Interactive Transcript
When we approach the text of Romans 3, we are not merely looking at a legal transaction. We are standing in the nave of a great theological cathedral.
The propitiation set forth by Christ is the central pillar holding up the entire superstructure of grace. Without it, the weight of divine justice collapses inward.
Notice Paul's deliberate use of 'hilasterion'. This isn't an accident of language. He is drawing our minds directly back to the Mercy Seat of the Old Covenant tabernacle.
The blood sprinkled there once a year is now replaced by the eternal, once-for-all action of the Son. The veil is not just torn; the architecture of access is entirely rebuilt.
Therefore, our confidence in entering the holy places is not based on our understanding of the blueprints, but on the finished work of the Architect Himself.
